Victory From Above

By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.- Hebrews 11:29-35

In 1973, while the entire country of Israel fasted for Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), the nation was caught completely off guard when one hundred thousand Egyptians invaded Israel from the south and over 1,400 Syrian tanks invaded Israel from the north. A significant portion of the Israeli military were either at home or in synagogues, so Israel was practically defenceless.

In the Golan Heights, the Syrians were armed with hundreds of tanks, but revealed only a few of their tanks giving the Israeli forces a false sense of security. However, a small and outnumbered Israeli force held back a large portion of the Syrian army for four days. At one point, it was said to be just three Israeli tanks against one hundred and fifty Syrian tanks. A sergeant, out of shells, wanted to leave his position but was ordered to stay put. With no ammo, he was up against impossible odds. The Syrian forces kept marching forward to crush what was supposedly left of the Israeli forces. Just when the Israelis were on the verge of collapse, the Syrians suddenly stopped and retreated! It was initially thought that the Syrians didn’t know the Israeli tanks were out of shells and seeing only a few tanks changing positions, they might have believed that Israel had more tanks than they actually did.

However, it was reported that after the Mossad (National intelligence agency of Israel) interrogated the commander of Syria’s 9th Army Division he swore an army of angels surrounded those few tanks Israel had. He was quoted as saying, “I would like to see you try and cross the Syrian missile lines while you see a whole host of white angels standing right on the missile lines and a white hand from heaven telling you to stop right there and move no further. Needless to say, I stopped then and there.”

This is just one out many miraculous incidents leading to Israel’s victory against their enemies during the 1973 Yom Kippur war and the 1967 six-day war against some Arab coalition.

Our theme scripture for the month is filled with similar stories of how God delivered His covenant children and gave them supernatural victories. This is proof that God indeed is a covenant keeping God.

What is more interesting and beautiful is that this covenant is not limited to just the Israelites or Israelis as they are now referred to. When God entered into this covenant with Abraham to be his God and God to his descendants, every born again child of God was included: “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:29). This covenant assures us of victory in the challenges of life. Simply put, in Christ Jesus we live our lives in partnership with God.

Sometimes, life’s challenges are daunting. But if you could just pause for a moment like David said in Psalm 23:4 (“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me…”), then you will realise that victory is always guaranteed.

So let your attitude henceforth be such as is expected of a covenant child of God, regardless of the circumstances you may be going through. The God of covenant victory will always break through for you in Jesus name.

It’s indeed your month of covenant victory!
